Scomparsa Ruth Westheimer, dottoressa famosa come “nonna Freud” del sesso
Se n'è andata all'età di 96 anni Ruth Westheimeril consulente sessuale più famoso d'America che con i suoi programmi radiofonici e televisivi porta avanti in maniera divertente. Parlava di sesso e dei problemi legati a questo, tanto da essere soprannominata “Nonna Freud“. A darne notizia il suo portavoce Pietro Lehu.
Il suo grande successo
Aveva solo 50 anni quando per la prima volta andò in onda nel 1980 sulla stazione radio di New York WYNY, rispondendo alle domande su sesso e relazioni, inviate dagli spettatori. Il programma chiamato Parlando di sesso (parlando sessualmente), era un piccolo segmento di soli 15 minuti che andava in onda la domenica dopo mezzanotte. Il successo fu però tale che rapidamente la dottoressa diventò uno dei sessuologi più richiesti dalla radio e dalla tv, diventando poi una grande imprenditrice di sé stessa.
Negli anni '80 diventò talmente famoso da essere presente in decine di programmi. Aveva una rubrica sulla rivista Ragazza giocatrice e il suo nome era addirittura dato a un gioco da tavolo. Ma non solo, le sue guide sulla sessualità andavano a rubare e gli studenti universitari la adoravano a tal punto, che pur di averla nel Campus venivano sborsate cifre da capogiro. È poi apparso nelle pubblicità di automobili, bevande, shampoo, macchine da scrivere e, non da ultimo, conservanti. Appari anche nel film Una donna o duecontro Gérard Depardieu e Sigourney Weaver anche se lei ci teneva a specificare che non era un'attrice.
Il cambiamento di un'epoca
A prescindere dal lato commerciale, che la dottoressa è riuscita a sfruttare al meglio, lei ha il grande merito di aver influenzato i costumi sessuali dell'epoca. Gli anni '80 erano un periodo in cui si abbondava di spettacolo di conversazione sul sesso, ma nessuno come lei è riuscito a parlarne in maniera così “medica e specifica”. “Perché non condividere la mia conoscenza sul sesso con il grande pubblico – raccontato in un'intervista – io sto promuovendo l'afabetizzazione“.
Il suo esplicito modo di parlare era però caramellato da un modo che non faceva pensare a qualcosa di scomodo, anzi, ma non si tirava indietro nel raccontare come funzionavano davvero le cose sotto le lenzuola. Probabilmente era proprio questo il segreto del suo grandissimo successo. La Westheimer, Non parlava solo di sesso ma anche di sentimenti. Come rinvigorire la passione in una coppia e quei piccoli segreti che ora con l'avvento di internet possono essere a disposizione di tutti, ma che all'epoca erano davvero oro colato soprattutto perché arrivavano da un sessuologo.
Figlia del sogno americano
Era arrivata in America poverissima con in tasca solo una laurea alla Sorbona e una grande determinazione dovuta alle difficoltà della vita, essendo stata orfana dell'Olocausto, rifugiata e combattente nella guerra per l'indipendenza israeliana. Raggiunse New York nel 1956 con due unioni naufragate alle spalle. A Parigi aveva sposato un israeliano”il primo ragazzo a cui è stato offerto di sposarmi“, raccontò sorridendo, ma il loro matrimonio non resse il suo amore per gli studi di psicologia.
Il secondo marito, da cui ebbe una figlia, era invece francese, ma non era intellettualmente alla sua altezza (come scrisse il New York Times), e anche questa unione finì miseramente. In America la sua vita era concentrata soprattutto sulla crescita della figlia di madre single e sui suoi immancabili studi. Per andare avanti aveva fatto qualche tipo di lavoro domestico compreso un dollaro all'ora. Dopo aver ottenuto un master alla Nuova scuola per la ricerca sociale nel 1959 fu assunto come assistente di ricerca presso la School of Public Health della Università della Columbia.
Il grande amore per lo studio
Caparbia e determinato fu poi nominato direttore della clinica di Harlem Genitorialità pianificata nel 1967 ma non considererò questo un punto di arrivo perché, nonostante il grande lavoro, continuò gli studi fino ad avere il dottorato in educazione alla Columbia nel 1970 e un post dottorato in sessualità umana al Ospedale presbiteriano di New Yorkformandosi con Helena Singer Kaplanconsiderata una delle pioniere dei terapisti sessuali.
La vita privata
Dopo due matrimoni falliti e lunghi anni di studi nel 1961, mentre sciava nei Catskills, incontrò l'uomo perfetto per lei, Manfred Westheimer. Come lei, un ebreo tedesco rifugiato. Il loro matrimonio durò fino al 1997, quando lui morì. Non particolarmente fortunata in amore lo fu invece nel lavoro. Il suo primo programma radiofonico che la fece conoscere al grande pubblico, arrivò grazie alla fama che suscitarono all'epoca le sue conferenze. All'inizio venivano pagati 25 dollari alla settimana per poi diventare milionario dopo il grande successo.
Nel 2019 gli è stato dedicato un documentario diretto da Ryan White, “Chiedi alla dottoressa Ruth“, che raccontava il suo viaggio come terapista sessuale delle celebrità. Nel 2023 è stata nominata ambasciatore onorario dello stato di New York dal di Kathy Hochul.
In quell'occasione perlò il grave problema dell'isolamento sociale associato a molteplici problemi di salute mentale. “Non voglio essere conosciuto solo come terapista sessuale – disse all'epoca – voglio essere conosciuto come terapista“.
